24 Years Later: An Open Letter to 9/11 First Responders

Dear First Responders,

Twenty-four years ago, the world stood still and held its breath as tragedy struck our nation. But you didn’t. You moved. You ran toward the smoke. Toward the screams. Toward the broken and frightened people in need of rescue.

You pulled strangers from rubble. You comforted the dying. You held the line when the world felt like it was falling apart. And you kept going back into the clutches of danger for one more person, and one more, and always one more.

We remember.

We remember your bravery on that day, and we honor the quiet, invisible courage you’ve shown ever since.

We cannot forget those who gave everything—the hundreds who lost their lives that day, and the many more who have continued to suffer in the years since. The toxic air and debris left scars that showed up as cancers and chronic illnesses, stealing far too many first responders decades later. Their sacrifice didn’t end when the towers fell—it is still unfolding, still costing lives, and still humbling us with the depth of what was given.

The toll that 9/11 took lingered in lungs and in minds, in relationships strained, in sleepless nights, and in the silent battles with depression or anger that too many of you have had to fight alone.

We know, because we’ve listened. We’ve walked with first responders who carry burdens most will never see. We’ve heard the stories. We’ve seen the cost. And we’ve witnessed the healing that begins when someone says, “You don’t have to carry this alone.”

We know it’s hard to ask for help. The demands of your work are a heavy weight to carry. Please don’t let stigma stop you from seeking support for your emotional and mental struggles. The world you tirelessly protect wants to protect you in return, and your family and friends need you—not just as heroes, but as whole, happy, and healthy individuals. Reaching out for care is a sign of strength, and you deserve to heal and thrive just as much as those you serve.

This letter is a simple but heartfelt thank you. Not just for what you did on 9/11, but for all you’ve continued to do in the years since for your families, your communities, and our country.

You are not forgotten. You are not alone. We see you. We honor you. We stand with you.

With deepest respect and enduring gratitude,

The Compassion Alliance Team
